Volswagen Owners! What is the most economical way to keep up with scheduled maintenance?

I have a 2004 Passat and have kept up to date with the scheduled maintenance by going thru VW dealers. I felt confort in knowing the mechanics were endeed experts in VW’s. That has become VERY expensive. Is there another way to maintain my car with quality maintenance? Any experiences would help, Thank you in advance.

Look for a foreign car specialist. Back in my home town there was one that had been around FOREVER and everyone I know took their Beamers, VW’s, Porches and stuff there. They can be more economical. Also, try other dealerships in different cities. Some can be cheaper than others. I know that if you have a warranty that can help… I had a ‘02 Jetta 1.8T and my some part in my injectors went out… $154 per injector head. It was paid since I had a warranty. Oil changes too. Maybe you can purchase an extended warranty that includes preventive maintenance?

As far as general maintenance goes, most speedy lube shops use quality oils and lubes to keep your car well greased. Stay away from Quaker State oil. For brakes, have an independent mechanic do it. The dealer can not void your warranty just because you don’t take your car to them for scheduled maintenance, but you do need to keep your receipts or keep a record of everything you have done.

Check out car talk’s website. This is the website of the two guys who host car talk on NPR. On this website you’ll find a database of mechanic shops that you can search by location and specialties. The site includes reviews of each shop from people who have used them. It’s a great way to find a specialist for your car without having to pay dealer prices.
