A Hoverboard for the Mechanically Inclined

September 1, 2015 By Joanna Laznicka Leave a Comment

Hoverboard MechanicsDesigned by Silicon Valley robotics innovator Robert Bigler the Hoverboard is as much a “board sport” as it is a tech gadget .  The inventors dream was to design personal electric vehicle that would produce the sensation of surfing on land.

The Hoverboard has a single, electrically motorized, 10” diameter wheel in the center of its deck.  The narrow wheel is computer-controlled and driven by as much as 5,000 watts of power to keep the rider balanced while also producing acceleration on-demand. Leaning forward causes the Hoverboard to accelerate, and leaning back causes it to decelerate, or go the other direction.  There are no controls to hold in your hand.  While the computer and power electronics automatically keep the Hoverboard under the rider front-to-back, the riders themselves develop the skill to balance side to side, maneuver and ultimately “carve”.  The experience evolves from hovering, to fully surfing on land.

Specifications:

  • Range: 12 Miles with the Standard Battery, over 20 Miles with Extended Battery
  • Weight: 25 Pounds
  • Charging Time: 16 Minutes with Supercharger or 1 hour with standard charger
  • Top Speed: 20 mph

The Hoverboard is equipped with onboard lighting, speakers to play music, ground-detecting sonar to keep the Hoverboard parallel to the changing ground, and LCD displays for active parameter monitoring while riding.

Programmable Hoverboard

For the Mechanically Inclined

Modular and Serviceable

When designing the Hoverboard, Mr. Bigler remembered simpler times, when people were empowered with the ability to work on their own cars, not just to maintain them, but also to customize and improve them.  He wanted to bring this empowerment back and so made the Hoverboard OPEN.  Tool-handy owners are not only allowed to open their Hoverboards – they are encouraged to do so.  The majority of service and even repair tasks can be conducted by the owners themselves.  This also means that the Hoverboard can be User-Upgraded.  Most often, the first to purchase tech-products have to then watch a rapid succession of improvements to the design quickly render their investment obsolete.  With the Hoverboard, such improved modules can be purchased and installed to keep the original investment always fully current.

User Programmable

To absolutely maximize an owner’s personal connection to the Hoverboard, it has also been made User-Programmable by way of a simple programming language called Hoverscript.  An extension of BASIC, Hoverscript is easily learned by people with no previous programming experience.  This programmability eliminates all boundaries to the owner’s ability to completely personalize their own Hoverboard.

Now, with working prototypes and production-ready designs, Mr. Bigler is going to Kickstarter to find out how many people share his passion. The launch on Kickstarter September 17, 2015 and culminating October 21, 2015, the day Marty McFly, in Back to the Future II, traveled into the future to discover the Hoverboard.

The Kickstarter campaign will reward the first to order with the lowest prices and the earliest delivery times – FIRST COME, FIRST SERVED, starting Sept. 17th.

810-Horsepower Supercharged MMD by Foose 2015 Mustang GT

July 30, 2015 By adminjlmr Leave a Comment

Foose MustangModern Muscle Design (MMD), the leader in aftermarket Mustang styling, along with the renowned vehicle designer, Chip Foose, today unveiled a one-off 810-horsepower supercharged MMD by Foose 2015 Mustang GT at Foose Design Inc. headquarters in Huntington Beach, California.

810-Horsepower Supercharged MMD by Foose 2015 Mustang GT

Today’s reveal comes ahead of the annual AmericanMuscle Mustang Show in Pennsylvania where the custom-built Mustang will be given away. The 2015 AmericanMuscle Mustang Show is the 7th annual charity all-Mustang car show in which 10,000+ spectators and nearly 3,000 Mustangs gather to benefit this year’s charity, Make-A-Wish®.

At the heart of MMD by Foose is a 5.0 liter V8 engine producing more than 810 horsepower at the crank courtesy of a specially tuned version of Bama Performance’s 2.9-liter twin scroll Whipple supercharger. After being routed through the transmission, a custom carbon fiber driveshaft and upgraded axles from The Driveshaft Shop, 650 horsepower reaches the custom 20” Foose Design wheels wrapped in Pirelli tires. Additional performance enhancements include a Magnaflow Competition Cat-back exhaust system built to optimize exhaust flow and performance for the MMD by Foose 2015 Mustang, as well as Vogtland Sport Suspension; assuring the perfect stance and handling to cope with the car’s increased acceleration.

Foose 2015 Mustang GT

Starting first as a simple sketch months prior, Foose incorporated his signature design aesthetic into every aspect of the Mustang, complementing the car’s high performance and bringing eight new MMD by Foose components to life which will be available as stand-alone parts to order later this year. Using an advanced system of sculpting and prototyping, MMD and Foose developed the new parts to become seamless additions to the Mustang’s factory design. Each new part was further refined to ensure world-class OE-spec fitments and customer satisfaction when they go on sale in the fall, sold exclusively through www.AmericanMuscle.com.

Foose Mustang -810-Horsepower Supercharged MMD

“We are very excited to work together with MMD and legendary designer Chip Foose to debut the MMD by Foose Mustang to the world,” said Justin Dugan of AmericanMuscle. “We are thrilled to be able to offer fans a chance to win such a unique Mustang at our car show this summer.”

810-Horsepower Supercharged MMD by Foose 2015 Mustang GT
The new MMD by Foose products installed on this 2015 Mustang GT include:

  • MMD by Foose Chin Spoiler: A sleek chin-spoiler that takes cues from the factory design and adds a cleaner, lower appearance to the front bumper.
  • MMD by Foose Hood Scoop: The dual ram-air styled hood scoop fills out the factory hood’s center channel and continues the sharp crease marking the center of the vehicle, adding an aggressive look to the front end of the car.
  • MMD by Foose Rocker Panels: The MMD by Foose rocker panels elegantly match the side profile of the vehicle when combined with the MMD by Foose chin spoiler, providing the whole vehicle with a lower overall look.
  • MMD by Foose Side Scoops: The MMD by Foose side scoops accent the vehicle’s factory body lines and draw inspiration from the performance pony cars of the 1960s and 70s. Working in conjunction with the MMD by Foose ¼ window louvers and hood scoop, these accessories add a unique look to the car that underscores its raw 810-horsepower performance.
  • MMD by Foose Quarter Window Louvers: Following the seam of the factory quarter window and adding just enough depth to nod at a retro/scooped design, MMD by Foose Quarter Window Louvers look as though they could have been added at the factory. In keeping the theme of all of the MMD by Foose parts, the subtle creases in the window louvers perfectly compliment the creases found in the hood scoop, side scoops, etc.
  • MMD by Foose Rear Spoiler: Playing off of the factory roof lines, license plate surround and lower bumper, this rear spoiler looks sleek and elegant enough to be original equipment, yet aggressive enough to turn heads.

Foose Mustang

“I am so excited about the parts that MMD and I have been working on for the 2015 Mustang. They really enhance the factory styling while keeping that classic Mustang look. We started by looking at the factory design language of the car itself and I really wanted to translate that into all of the parts that I designed. I didn’t want them to look like an afterthought or obviously an aftermarket part, but something you could get right from the factory.” – Chip Foose
810-Horsepower Supercharged MMD by Foose 2015 Mustang GT
Starting today and through August 3, 2015, fans can enter online up to once a week to win the MMD by Foose. AmericanMuscle will fly the winner to its 2015 Mustang Show in Mohnton, PA. Chip Foose will be on-hand to deliver the keys to the lucky winner on August 15. The show benefits the Make-a-Wish® Foundation and is expected to draw more than 10,000 spectators and more than 2,500 Mustangs. Must be 18 or older to enter and a resident of the United States. Tips for Dads: Teaching Kids about Car Maintenance

Tips for Dads: Teaching Kids about Car Maintenance

Many Americans have fond memories of how their father maintained the family vehicle.  They remember if their dad cussed and fussed under the hood.  They remember if their father checked the tire pressure at every fill up.  They remember if their dad lovingly washed the family car every Saturday.

As a Dad, how you maintain your family vehicle will set the standard for how your kids maintain their cars in the future.  Your maintenance standards will become their maintenance standards.  When you involve your kids in maintaining the family car, you are teaching valuable lessons.  As a Dad, you have to decide what to teach your kids about cars.  Here are some ideas:

Car Maintenance for Young Children.

Even young kids can help Dad clean out or wash the family car.  They can run a hand vacuum in the interior.  They can run a cleaning wipe across the dash.  They can spread soap suds across the car on a hot summer afternoon.  Even a trip through the car wash is an adventure for young kids.  If your car care center has a window looking out on the service bays, kids will be excited to see your family’s car go up on a lift.  Ultimately, the lesson you teach in maintaining your car is that they too need to take care of the things they value.  This lesson can immediately extend to their own toy cars and bicycles.

Car Maintenance for School-Aged Children.

As kids get older, they can participate in more advanced tasks.  For example, if you are doing mechanical work yourself, kids can act as tool box assistants and learn to recognize wrenches, screwdrivers, and other tools.  You can even involve them in turning wrenches.  School-aged kids can help replace air filters, check the oil, or check tire pressure on the car.  These little tasks help build a sense of pride and accomplishment.

Car Maintenance for Teens.  As teens approach driving age, they should learn basics like how to change a tire, how to check the oil, how to pump gas, and how to replace filters and wiper blades.  These simple tasks are basics that every driver should know.  If you are mechanically savvy, you may also want to teach your teens how to change their own oil and how to do simple repairs.  If your family has a project car or is maintaining an older car, you may even teach them how to more advanced repairs.  With today’s more sophisticated cars, car repair work may lie beyond the skills of most dads.  However, as a Dad, you can still teach valuable lessons about maintenance intervals, the importance of oil changes, the importance of getting an estimate, or budgeting for car repairs.  In teaching teens about car maintenance, you are helping to ensure that they will be able to handle minor emergency repairs on the road.

Of course, while you teach these car maintenance lessons, you’ll have to watch your cussing, your kids will always remember those words.

Air-Powered Engines Sprouting Up in Little Green Cars

November 7, 2014 By adminjlmr Leave a Comment

Eureka, they’ve done it again!  Automakers have made a most miraculous discovery in modern engine designs – air.  Not so miraculous, you quibble?  Would you be enticed to reconsider your position if you learned that compressed air engines (CAEs) offer low to zero pollution emissions with the main power source, air, basically free for the taking?  There’s an air of genius in the vision.

CAEs, in fact, are quite feasible with little green air cars sprouting up at car shows everywhere.  A handful of models are reaching the marketplace.  Kudos to the tenacious visionaries who pushed their dreams forward through ever-surging criticism.  It looks like vehicles engaging CAE technology and their advocates are here to stay awhile as engineers work tirelessly to harness the winds of change into viable, environmentally-friendly air-powered solutions.

Don’t let cynics convince you this technology has no future.  History proves otherwise.  Just take a look at the failed attempts at developing an internal combustion engine as an example of success in the face of obstacles albeit success with a cost.  There were many failed designs tested using everything from gunpowder to coal gas as fuel and some designs running only briefly at a mere 10 mph.  Eventually, gasoline-powered internal combustion engines were successful as is witnessed today.  However, after years of choking on toxin-rich emissions produced by those engines, clean engine power in the form of CAEs is the breath of fresh air that fuels the promise of a cleaner and greener tomorrow.

Should CAE technology take flight, the planet can breathe an enormous sigh of relief as toxic emissions are reduced by 80 to 100 percent.  An average fuel stop would cost a mere $2.00 per tank for compressed air that can carry an air car 125 miles.  Compare that to an average cost of $19 to travel 125 miles in a gasoline-powered engine.* With CAE technology, oil changes would amount to little more than swapping out a bit of non-toxic, biodegradable vegetable oil.  Spark plugs, batteries, antifreeze, and mufflers would become a thing of the past in our landfills.

CAE technology is definitely making headway and it’s quite realistic to expect CAEs to cross over into motorcycle, lawn mower, and power tool markets not to mention the world’s city bus and taxi systems.  Experiments include a motorcycle prototype built using scuba tanks filled with compressed air.  The motorcycle is capable of reaching speeds up to 87 mph.  Luxembourg-based Motor Development International (MDI), a major player in the air car market, has branded their air car through the AirPod name.  Reports indicate the AirPod is capable of reaching 68 mph and can be fueled in two to three minutes.  MDI is marketing the AirPod as “small size, tiny price, zero pollution, fun, and futuristic design that can be driven with a joystick.”

In January 2007, MDI signed a $28 million license agreement with India-based Tata Motors allowing Tata to market and sell air cars in India using MDI’s technology.  Tata wasted no timing moving forward with their MiniCAT which travels about 186 miles on a tank of compressed air.  French automaker Peugeot Citroen has unveiled their air-hybrid car that runs on both compressed air and gas and boasting 117 mpg.  Peugeot Citroen expects to have their air-hybrid car on the streets of Europe by 2016.  The cost of both the compressed air engine (CAE) cars and the hybrid-air car are around $8,000.

So buckle up folks for this incredible journey into the future of sustainability.  Tune into the collective consciousness of eco-friendly possibilities like compressed air engine (CAE) cars and hybrid-air cars.  The world is evolving one green idea at a time as it embraces new technologies in the interest of a cleaner, greener tomorrow.  There’s still a long way to go but hopefully many of us will get there in little green cars.

*Figured on an average gasoline cost of $3.69/gallon and gas mileage at 24 mpg.

What is a Mercedes AMG?

October 25, 2014 By Steven Symes Leave a Comment

The Mercedes AMG line is manufactured by Mercedes-AMG GmbH, which is a subsidiary of Mercedes-Benz. The company makes performance-oriented versions of many of the different Mercedes models, including the company’s sport utility vehicles. These models are easily identified by the AMG badge located on the back of each vehicle.

Mercedes AMG C 63

AMG was founded as a company in 1967 by Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher. Originally AMG was a separate company from Mercedes. Aufrecht and Melcher modified various Mercedes models, increasing the cars’ overall performance so they could compete in professional races. The initials for the company came from the first letters of the founders’ last names, plus the first letter of Aufrecht’s birthplace in Germany.

Four years after the company’s inception, AMG gained worldwide notoriety. The 300 SEL 6.8 AMG was entered into a 24 hour race at the Spa-Francorchamps, a yearly endurance race held in Germany. The car finished first in its class and second overall in the race.

In 1991 the Daimler Corporation acquired 51 percent of AMG and began working on its first joint development of a vehicle. Two years later, the Mercedes C 36 AMG was released, becoming an instant hit with consumers. In 2005, the Daimler Corporation bought the remaining portion of AMG.

AMG models have features that are not found in the regular line of Mercedes vehicles. All AMG models come with distinct wheels that have the AMG insignia stamped on them. Carbon fiber parts are more common on AMG vehicles. AMG also outfits the vehicles with some body panels that are different from the regular Mercedes line, making the AMG models easier to distinguish at a glance. With a few exceptions, AMG models come with larger engines that produce more torque and horsepower than the engines used in the regular Mercedes lineup.

The Importance of an Auto Glass Repair or Replacement

September 7, 2014 By adminjlmr Leave a Comment

Repair experts know all about auto glass. They know that the windshield is made of a laminated glass that is designed for safety. Customers do not know about the special work involved in manufacturing cars. For an auto glass repair or replacement, they must contact the right provider in the local area.

Any good auto glass repair provider deals with problems right away. Cracked and chipped glass must be fixed soon because it gets ruined easily. Repair people can identify the types of glass cracks. The bull’s eye is one type that looks like a broken circle. Each crack is unsightly and gets worse to ruin the views of drivers. At some businesses, cars cannot be certified or sold if cracked glass is shown.

Fixing glass immediately is the best advice for drivers. Regular people do not have the chemicals and techniques needed for the job.For busy people, using a mobile technician is an option. Some professionals have severe car problems, but they cannot stop working right away. These professionals are able to arrive at any place of business.

The car windshield is more crucial than many people assume. There are several reasons why drivers get windshield repairs done immediately. If the shield is cracked, it decreases the chances of survival during a crash. As glass ages, problems appear and become less tolerable. It is almost impossible to keep the glass clean and clear forever. Only a professional knows if an auto glass replacement is necessary. The usual procedure involves an evaluation and cost estimate.

An auto glass replacement is recommended for unacceptable damages. This type of glass is supposed to be sturdy and long-lasting in order to resist strong impact. Engineers make different layers of the glass. People tint their windows to maintain privacy and block harmful sunlight.Getting an auto glass replacement is simple nowadays. It is important to install a newer, better version of glass that is stronger than the previous one.

Auto glass repair is more important than people think. A car has passenger airbags, but a secure windshield is more important due to the severe injuries. Getting a windshield fixed does not seem like a significant task, but it saves lives during severe crashes. New fortified glass should be installed on the front, side and back of a vehicle. Glass specialists do not train without a reason, so customers should find the right provider.

MMD Is Giving Away, Muscle Mustangs & Fast Fords Cover Car

May 19, 2014 By adminjlmr Leave a Comment

Muscle Mustangs

MMD and AmericanMuscle teamed up to custom design Project MMD. Featuring over $30,000 in aftermarket parts and the sleek, modern design MMD is known for, this is a one-of-a-kind Mustang that can serve as the perfect show car or daily driver.

muscle_cars_mustangs

One person will get to drive home from the annual AmericanMuscle Car Show —one of the largest Mustang car show around—in their newly acquired magazine cover car—Project MMD. Not only is this Muscle Mustangs and Fast Ford’s (MM & FF) May 2014 Cover Car, it’s also the same build that was featured at Forgestar’s booth for the 2013 SEMA Auto Show. The winner will be selected on 8/4/2014 and will be handed the keys at the AmericanMuscle car show on 8/16/2014.

The Car – SEMA 2014

Sometimes you plan out an entire build before you ever pick up a wrench—this was not how Project MMD began. This car started out as a way to showcase some of MMD’s most popular modifications, but once the opportunity to showcase a car at the 2013 SEMA Auto Show came along, the guys at MMD went back to the drawing board. They commissioned AmericanMuscle to handle the performance aspects of the car while they gave it an appearance overhaul. The end result was a successful appearance at Forgestar’s SEMA booth and a few neck snapping trips in Las Vegas and the surrounding countryside.

Muscle Mustangs & Fast Fords Cover Car – May 2014

Project MMD was designed and built to be a SEMA car, but that doesn’t mean it’s not a fully functional street machine—the guys at MMD actually drive it around town and to shows. That’s what pegged the interest of the crew over at MM & FF and once they finally saw Project MMD in person at SEMA, they knew they were looking at a cover car.

Project MMD – Styling

What began as your run-of-the-mill 2014 Oxford White Premium GT received the perfect synergy of classically inspired styling mixed with a bold, attention demanding modern twist. The car takes inspiration from the late ’60s
Mustangs, such as the GT350 style spoiler and hood scoop. It also employs more recent aesthetics such as a matte white vinyl wrap and an adjustable air ride suspension that lets you drop the car to the ground when parked or at a show, all while still delivering the performance of coil overs.
